Caledonia Historical Society Posted on August 17, 2017 by Bruce SeidnerSeptember 18, 2021

WHAT IS THE CHS AND THE CHV?

The Caledonia Historical Village (CHV) located on 5 Mile Road just east of Hwy 38 is owned and operated by the Caledonia Historical Society (CHS).  The Caledonia Historical Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit, and all members are volunteers.  Therefore all renovations, all maintenance, all activities at the Caledonia Historical Village are undertaken by those volunteers.  All funding of those renovations, maintenance and activities is through donations, grants, membership and fund raising.

THE CHS AND THE CHV ARE GOING TO BE TV STARS!

On August 16th John McGivern and his producer and camera crew visited the Caledonia Historical Village.  John hosts the weekly show “Around the Corner” on Milwaukee PBS.  One of his programs to be shown in March, 2018 will feature the Caledonia and Wind Point area including the CHV!  John also told us that his program has been picked up for world wide distribution through the public broadcast system.

THE SEVENTH ANNUAL FESTIVAL IS ALMOST HERE!

The CHS annual Heritage Festival will be September 9th and 10th.  Our theme is “Back to the Past” and we are hoping individuals with local family history will be willing to present a brief family memory or tradition or local story.  If you are interested in doing this, please contact Chuck Miles at [email protected].  As always there will be food vendors, craft vendors, many children activities, sawmill demonstrations, re-enactor groups, cannon demonstrations and much more!  Don’t forget about the pie auction which will be held on Saturday, September 9th at 2 pm.  Entry and parking is free, but please consider making a donation to help CHS continue to collect and disseminate Caledonia history.

Come Join Us!

The Caledonia Historical Society  meets the third Thursday of every month with the next meeting scheduled for September 21st at 6:30 pm in the 1902 Milwaukee Road Depot in the Caledonia Historical Village.   The meetings are open to the public and everyone is welcome.

WE ARE OPEN FOR THE SEASON!

Come join us on the fourth Sunday of the month, May through September,  when the buildings are open for the season.  The buildings will be open from 1 pm until 4 pm with docents available to provide information.  Come admire the progress that has been made to the renovation of the 1919 Botting Road Machine Shed.  Come view the new additions to the artifacts stored throughout the buildings and the park grounds.  Come be amazed at what history has to say to you.

OUR INVENTORY

Thanks to UWP student volunteers and CHS member volunteers, the inventory of the many, many items collected by the CHS since 2001 is progressing smoothly.  This is an example of a railroad depot bench donated to CHS that resides in the 1902 Milwaukee Road Depot and the archival information gathered so far.  As more data is assembled, the data for each item will be completed.

BUZZING WITH ACTIVITY AT THE CALEDONIA HISTORICAL PARK

Caledonia Historical Society Posted on March 19, 2017 by Bruce SeidnerMarch 19, 2017

BUZZING WITH ACTIVITY??

What does that mean for the Caledonia Historical Society and the Caledonia Historical Park on 5 Mile Rd just east of Hwy 38?

  1.  The renovation of the Botting Rd Barn will begin in earnest.  There is lots to do.  We have siding to replace.  We have siding to repair.  We have a stairway to put in place so we can easily get to the second floor.  We need windows fixed.  We need doors placed and repaired.  AND that is just the beginning!  We need volunteers to help us with these projects and the maintenance and upkeep of all of our buildings and the park grounds.  If you want to help, contact Chuck Miles at [email protected].
  2. The inventory of the CHS numerous artifacts is finally underway.  The CHS is fortunate that a UWP history major volunteered to help us identify and catalog our many items.  Any new donations need to have appropriate paper work completed by the donor and appropriate placement by the CHS receiving member.
  3.  April 24th is clean up day to get the buildings and the park grounds ready for the season.  See the following list of upcoming events.  If you want to help, contact Chuck Miles at [email protected].

UPCOMING EVENTS!

The Caledonia Historical Society will be participating for the second year in the Real Racine Tour of local sites.  This year the tour is scheduled for Saturday, May 6th.  Put it on your calendar!  The Caledonia Historical Park will be open from 12 pm to 4 pm with docents available in the buildings to discuss the history of the buildings and artifacts contained in the buildings.  Visit the Real Racine website for information about all of the sites participating in the tour.
