THE LATEST CHS NEWS

Caledonia Historical Society Posted on January 28, 2016 by Bruce SeidnerJanuary 28, 2016

We are still fund raising in order to get that 1919 machine shed/barn on a foundation.  Look for upcoming events for the warmer months.  Plans are in the works to bring back the successful Dinner in the Depot and a live Radio Show.  And mark your calendars for September 10th and 11th when the Caledonia Heritage Festival (previously listed as our Homecoming Festival) returns for another weekend of fun wrapped in historic atmosphere. Watch for updates.

CHS was just notified that the Runzheimer Foundation of Waterford, WI has generously approved a grant for $3000 to pay for the LVL beams needed for the machine shed/barn.  CHS is grateful for the generosity of the Runzheimer Foundation and everyone in the community who has helped with this project.

We have a very few in new condition books of “Journey To A Village, Caledonia 1835-2008” by Nicholas P. Weber.  If you are interested, contact our President, Leroy Schmidt, at [email protected] right away.  The cost is $20.

The Caledonia Historical Society meets the third Thursday of every month.  Starting with the meeting on November 19th, we will meet at the Caledonia/Mt. Pleasant Memorial Park at 9416 Northwestern Ave.   Our next meeting is February 18th at 6:30 pm.  Everyone is welcome.

We have several items for sale to help pay the expenses of maintaining our historic village.   The items include mugs, note cards, the book, “Milwaukee Then and Now,” bricks for the walk way by the Town Hall, and posters of the 1902 Depot.   Spring must be coming so think about renting our historic buildings and/or our historic village grounds for your event small or large. If you are interested, send us a note via the Contact Us page on this website.

CHS UPDATES

Caledonia Historical Society Posted on December 21, 2015 by Bruce SeidnerSeptember 18, 2021

Once again a big thank you to everyone who supported us by purchasing baked goods or donating while CHS sold baked goods at the Educators Credit Union on Hwy 20 on December 11th and the 19th.  We raised over $850.  Here is Nancy Nelson showing a sample of what the wonderful members had baked.

CHS held our December pot luck on the 17th.  The food was tasty, the many attendees were jolly and the program was history related.  Our guest speaker and some of the  CHS members were dressed in early 1800’s appropriate attire.

Why are we working so hard to raise funds?  It is a red two story barn/machine shed that was moved to our historic village at Linwood Park.  Please see the Racine County Eye article dated December 10th for an update and explanation.

CHS UPDATES AND UPCOMING EVENTS

Caledonia Historical Society Posted on October 31, 2015 by Bruce SeidnerSeptember 18, 2021

Thanks to a generous grant from the Thom E. Dailey Foundation we were able to repaint the 1920 Caboose and finish the painting of the 1902 Depot.  The lettering has yet to be completed on the caboose, but the new red coat of paint will protect the caboose from deteriorating.  The west side of the Depot now looks as fantastic as the rest of the depot.

The foundation has been dug for the barn.  Now we need cooperation from the weather and everyone involved in finishing the foundation and placing the barn.

The buildings at Linwood Park are closed for the winter, except for specific scheduled events.  If you enjoy visiting  the CHS Linwood Park Historic Village, please consider making a donation to the CHS mission.   We are a non-profit, volunteer organization and operate through donations,  grants and membership dues.

September 2015 News

Caledonia Historical Society Posted on September 16, 2015 by Bruce SeidnerSeptember 18, 2021

A big thank you to all who helped make the 2015 Homecoming Festival a great event.  The weather was perfect and there was remembrance, education and just plain fun for everyone who attended.  The ceremony honoring our Veterans was especially heart warming.  Here are a few pictures, with more to be posted to the photo gallery soon.

The Caledonia Historical Society meets the 3rd Thursday of the month.  The next meeting is September 17th at the Old Town Hall at Linwood Park, Hwy 38 and 5 Mile Rd, at 6:30 pm.  Everyone is welcome.

The next Open House is Sunday, September 27th, from 1 pm to 4 pm.  All of the buildings in Linwood Park will be open to the public with docents available.   This could be your last chance to visit with CHS members at the park this season since we close the park for the winter months.  We appreciate donations, but there is no charge for the Open House.

The 1902 Depot is finally completely painted on the outside–check it out!   The Caboose has been repainted also.   The barn should have a foundation in a couple of weeks and then the barn will once again become a two story structure.

Remember that we have items for sale such as mugs, note cards, depot prints, the “Milwaukee Then and Now” books, and bricks for the walkway at the Old Town Hall.  CHS is a non-profit operated by volunteers only and all proceeds help to realize our goals
